“Follower” By Seamus Heaney

Seamus Heaney presents the poem follower to represent the relationship between the father and the son.By showing the aundience that the effects of the word its self “follower” went from when he used to follow his father steps  and  get in the way when he was working with a horse plough”I stumbled in his hob-nailed wake”This tell us that the son himself used to get in the way and fall on his fathers “polished sod”.So the narrator keeps this idea going through out the poem until the last stanza where the story has a twist. On the last stanza the narrator begins to change it from the past when the son was interrupting his fathers works “I was a nuisance, tripping and falling ” but the twist is that the narrator says ” but today It is my father” This gives the reader the image that the father is now old and “keeps stumbling”.

The structure of the poem is made so that at every start of each stanza .The boy talks about how he compliments his father “an expert” “my father” so he always complimented his father or talked about how he got helped by his father but at the end it changes it ” I was a nuisance” so to remember the past then says “But today ” and refers to his father doing his mistakes.

The Dickensian Aspect

We all know what is poverty.Poverty is a not something you decide to chose for.It is more like a raffle out of the 255(average birth rate per minute worldwide)but that is not the bad part. The bad part is when you have someone that actually has loads of money and buying someone a meal deal will not affect the income of the rich person, yet we still see these greedy people who have no consideration for the poor and even think they should be giving less than what they are already giving(Like when Scrooge says to Bob Cratchit “15 BOB” as to say 15 shilling in the Victorian times.)There are also other types of poverty’s which can be caused by yourself”Spiritual poverty ” something that “Scrooge” had.

People can have Spiritual poverty as stated above.I refer to Scrooge  because he was a man that was non religious he only hoped in his mind that he would die and he would just leave everything behind he did not have what us believers call “hope” knowing that some of us hopes actually gives that relief of stress sometimes or even make you become a better person e.g. when someone randomly comes to you and hits you for no reason you could just say in your mind and “hope” that god get him back .

Intellectual poverty this is exactly what MR Scrooge is it when he believes nothing is better than him or he cannot improve himself n matter how much he tries to improve himself. Just like in the scenes when he is with the ghost of future ad he sees the couple says “oh yh Scrooge he was always lonely” This gives us the idea that he just never had another different type of lifestyle he stayed lonely which does not necessary mean with a girlfriend or wife but just some type of relative that would support him.In a matter of fact he did have his nephew to support him but yet again Scrooge denied the idea of him actually accepting the Christmas invitation knowing that Scrooge cannot be a better person than what he is already.

Poverty of Solidarity this is what Scrooge definitely has, he doesn’t accept his own family as being his companions.Family is something that comes automatically but the real thing is, friends you need to have these to help you out and in life to get these you earn them depending on what things you do as you know his only friend was Marley

Types of poverties that there are today

Spiritual Poverty

This is when people don’t care about their soul or spirit they have no meaning to their life they are always stressing about how hard their life is and do not have hope on eternal life for anything like that .Having hope that their is a better place where you can go when you die or at least believing that there is a God to protect you

Intellectual Poverty

The poverty of not thinking that you are better than what you imagine. You thinking you are rubbish and nothing else can fix you .That you cannot be better than what you already are.

Poverty of Solidarity

The poverty of having someone by your side.Family comes naturally but in your natural environmental you need someone apart from your family because you won’t always have them.

Economic Poverty

Scavengers will always make roughly £2 and that only helps with buying a meal to survive the day it does not give you access to the normal human services. This is why you need generosity and help from the rich to give to the poor because by balancing the scale the world would be better and there would be much more opportunities.

Row A : Parsing

I Have chosen 2 quotes relating to poverty seeing as we are focusing on poverty this term.

Quote 1:

The way to turn our economy around is not by making rich people poorer, it’s by making poor people richer.
By:Marco Rubio

In this quote we have to different type of meanings in 1.Marco says he does not want rich people to become poorer but for poorer to become richer. In my opinion I believe this would mean for the rich to donate to ways of improving the lifestyle of the poor people and also benefiting them profitably as well, a good example of this would be to start creating jobs for them there and creating houses so you would being to create an economy which would need to be founded at the start but will soon expand and balance itself out and then your profit will begin to enter.

Quote 2:

As you simplify your life, the laws of the universe will be simpler; solitude will not be solitude, poverty will not be poverty, nor weakness weakness.

Henry David Thoreau

In this quote Henry says that life will become much simpler as it goes on and on and things will be lost as life goes on such as poverty hate.He in others is trying to say us humans will create a better place in this world . The writer makes you think that this is true by putting himself in your position and a thoughts in a way.He uses the power of your to persuade you to think that in your mind you know that it’s actually happening.

Life is a dream for the wise, a game for the fool, a comedy for the rich, a tragedy for the poor.

Sholom Aleichem

In this quote it says that “life” is like a dream for the smart ones. For the dumb ones its just a game you get to the end at it is over. For the rich ones life is just a joke(comedy) and for the poor the worst thing ever.

HWK Row A

Charles Dickens creates Scrooge’s character by describing him in various different forms. Just like the following:

“but he was tight-fisted”In this small quote Charles Dickens refers to Scrooge as tight-fisted ( means someone that is not willing to spend or give much money)which is exactly what Scrooge is, a person that only wants to make money for himself but not to share it out but to actually keep and not spend it in anything else.Charles then says “The cold within him froze his old features”This gives the reader and idea that Scrooge was never like this, he did have a good side apart from the “a squeezing, wrenching, grasping, scraping, clutching, covetous, old sinner”So this means somewhere in the past Scrooge did have a warm heart and did get well with others and possibly even shared money .

“External heat and cold had little influence on Scrooge”Charles says this to give the reader the thought that no type of  temperature or weather could change Scrooge’s emotion apart from the ones described above so this means that Scrooge only had 1 goal and this was to save as much money as he can and spend almost nothing. This would relate to him not having many conversations with others seeing as people do tend to change mood depending to the weather and temperature.”Nobody ever stopped him in the street to say, with gladsome looks”This is very obvious why.No one will ever want to talk to someone that is very anti-social and those not think on anything else but money so no one want to talk to him apart from his employee Bob.

A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens

Ghost of Christmas Past (Chapter 2):

Chapter 2 is based about a Ghost of the past that Scrooge got warned about on the previous chapter by The Ghost of Marley. Scrooge is sleeping and suddenly wakes up, the time is all wrong. Scrooge is confused and doesn’t know if its day or night.Suddenly when the clock struck 1 the Ghost of the Christmas Past appeared. He looked not young but not old. Tall but not too tall. His voice was soft and gentle almost like a young boy’s voice .Then the Ghost says he is the Ghost of his past. The ghost then shows him the past Christmas that happened.

The feelings that Charles has created for me are varied because of the changes of emotion in Scrooge. We all know Scrooge as a cold, tight, lonely person, but when we see that Scrooge is eager to seeing his past “Scrooge muttered, with an unusual catching in his voice, that it was a pimple; and begged the Ghost to lead him where he would.” This action of Scrooge wanting the Ghost shows us that, Scrooge did want to see more and actually enjoyed the view seeing as he said “I was bred in this place. I was a boy here.”

This scene overall creates a feeling of gratefulness, happiness, selfishness, sadness this is because of the following actions that Scrooge does,” It’s dear old honest Ali Baba. Yes, yes, I know. One Christmas time, when yonder solitary child was left here all alone, he did come, for the first time, just like that. Poor boy. And Valentine,” said Scrooge, “and his wild brother, Orson; there they go. And what’s his name, who was put down in his drawers, asleep, at the Gate of Damascus; don’t you see him? And the Sultan’s Groom turned upside down by the Genii; there he is upon his head. Serve him right. I’m glad of it. What business had he to be married to the Princess.” This shows us that Scrooge still remembers his old memories and that he remembers everyone and gives the reader the idea that Scrooge was never lonely or had no friends his entire lifetime but actually his childhood was happy and full of friends. “In a changed nature; in an altered spirit; in another atmosphere of life; another Hope as its great end. In everything that made my love of any worth or value in your sight. If this had never been between us,” This is the part that gives the reader the felling of sadness because Scrooges girlfriend noticed that he was a different man “you were another man.” but now he is just a man that only measures everything by a value of some sort as shown by the highlighted words in bold.

Saterical School Report

London Nautical School. What an excellent school. These are just a few points of the schools excellence. The toilets are superb the slippery green slimy floor is just great for skiing. The lunch hall kitchen is great, the sinks add and extra layer of greasy protection to the plates so they stay clean for a long time. The rat wipes are a great with the smell of rat fragrance. The floorboard is very expensive because while you are walking you can create your own squeaky sounds to enjoy your time at London Nautical School, this shows that the school funds are very high.Classrooms are top-notch with their decorated walls and ceiling of blood and spit balls.Students attitude towards teachers and teachers towards students it’s fantastic just a kick or a punch in the face is a great warm welcoming to the class this is why you must have your boxing gloves ready at all times. The school overall has very gifted students in all areas from, best at polishing teachers shoes without getting whipped to how many can you kill with the same knife.
